For the Textileweekend 2010, I created a “Sock Factory”. I programmed two different pairs of customizable wool socks, to knit on a digital knitting machine. Visitors were able to chose their type of socks, size, number of stripes and color scheme, and then watch the socks being knit for them in about 15min. Each pair of socks is “mirrored”, the left sock is not identical to the right, instead, the color scheme is reversed, for faster knitting and a unique product. To make the color choosing process easier, the visitors could play with a paper system to preview their color scheme.
